Bioshock Creator Was Shocked by Irrational Games Closure

Ken Levine, director of BioShock Infinite, reflects on the unexpected closure of Irrational Games following the game's success. He describes the decision by Take-Two Interactive as "complicated," revealing that the studio's shutdown came as a surprise to most, including himself. Despite his own desire to leave Irrational, Levine anticipated the studio's continued operation. "I thought they were going to continue. But it wasn’t my company," he stated.

The interview with Edge Magazine (via PC Gamer) sheds light on Levine's personal challenges during BioShock Infinite's development, impacting his leadership and ultimately contributing to his departure. He acknowledges, "I don’t think I was in any state to be a good leader." Despite the closure, Levine strived to ensure a smooth transition for his team, implementing comprehensive severance packages and offering continued support.

The legacy of Irrational Games, known for titles like System Shock 2 and BioShock Infinite, remains significant. Levine speculates that a BioShock remake would have been a suitable project for the studio to undertake.

Anticipation for BioShock 4 is high, with fans hoping the developers will learn from the experiences surrounding BioShock Infinite's release. While an open-world setting is speculated, and the game was announced five years ago, an official release date remains unconfirmed as 2K and Cloud Chamber Studios continue development. The first-person perspective is expected to continue.
