Twenty-five years after its debut, the origin story behind the name "Super Smash Bros." has finally been revealed by its creator, Masahiro Sakurai. This beloved Nintendo crossover fighting game, featuring characters from across Nintendo's vast library, owes its name to a surprisingly simple concept.
Sakurai's recent YouTube video explains that the name reflects the game's core dynamic: "friends settling little disagreements." The title, however, wasn't solely Sakurai's creation. The late Satoru Iwata, former Nintendo president, played a pivotal role.
Sakurai details a process involving multiple name suggestions and a final meeting with Shigesato Itoi, creator of the Mother/Earthbound series. It was Iwata who ultimately chose "brothers," explaining that while the characters weren't literally siblings, the term subtly conveyed a sense of friendly rivalry rather than outright animosity. This nuanced interpretation perfectly captures the spirit of the game.
The video also offers a glimpse into Sakurai's personal memories of Iwata, including Iwata's direct involvement in programming the original Super Smash Bros. prototype, then known as Dragon King: The Fighting Game for the Nintendo 64. This behind-the-scenes look provides a heartwarming context for the game's enduring legacy.
