Assassin's Creed Shadows: Revamped Parkour and Dual Protagonists

Assassin's Creed Shadows, launching February 14th, introduces significant changes, particularly to its parkour system and protagonist design. The game, set in feudal Japan, features two playable characters: the stealthy shinobi Naoe and the powerful samurai Yasuke, each offering a distinct gameplay experience.

Ubisoft has overhauled the parkour mechanics, moving away from the free-climbing of previous titles. Instead, players will navigate pre-designed "parkour highways," specifically designated climbing routes. While this may seem restrictive, Ubisoft assures players that most climbable surfaces remain accessible, though requiring strategic approaches. This focused design allows for more controlled level design, especially considering Yasuke's inability to climb.

Enhanced Parkour Features:

  • Seamless Ledge Dismounts: Players can smoothly dismount ledges with stylish flips, replacing the previous ledge-grabbing mechanic.
  • Improved Prone Position: A new prone position allows for diving while sprinting, in addition to sliding.
  • Grappling Hook: The grappling hook remains a key tool for accessing otherwise unreachable areas.

The shift in parkour design aims to balance classic stealth gameplay with the more action-oriented combat of recent RPG-style entries like Odyssey and Valhalla. The dual protagonists cater to both playstyles, offering players a choice between stealth and open combat.

With a February 14th release date on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC, Assassin's Creed Shadows faces stiff competition from titles like Monster Hunter Wilds, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and Avowed. Only time will tell if it can achieve dominance in a crowded release month.
