Recent layoffs at BioWare, the studio behind Dragon Age: The Veilguard, have sparked widespread conversation about the current state of the gaming industry. Larian Studios' publishing director, Michael Daus, has again weighed in on social media, addressing the issue of industry-wide job cuts. He argues for valuing employees and holding leadership accountable, rather than blaming rank-and-file workers:
Avoiding large-scale layoffs between or after projects is achievable. Preserving institutional knowledge within the team is vital for future success.
While "trimming the fat" is a frequently cited reason for these layoffs, and understandable given financial pressures, Daus questions the necessity of aggressive corporate efficiency. He suggests that this approach might be justifiable with a string of consecutive successful releases, but widespread layoffs are simply a drastic cost-cutting measure, not a solution.
The core problem, according to Daus, lies in the strategic decisions made by upper management, yet the consequences are consistently borne by lower-level employees. He uses the analogy of a pirate ship, where the captain would be the first to be sacrificed, suggesting that game development companies should adopt a similar approach to accountability.
