Sony Cancels Nine Games, Faces Fan Backlash

Sony is currently facing significant challenges following the failure of its ambitious plan to launch 12 game services by 2025. The company's recent decision to cancel nine of these projects has left many players frustrated and disappointed.

In 2022, Jim Ryan, who was then the president of Sony Interactive Entertainment, announced the initiative to introduce 12 game services. This strategy was designed to adapt to the evolving gaming industry. However, it met with resistance from gamers who were concerned that Sony might be shifting its focus away from single-player experiences. Despite assurances from Sony that it would continue to support single-player games, the reality has been quite different.

It has been revealed that nine out of the twelve planned projects have been canceled. While Helldivers 2 has been a success, drawing in millions of players, other projects like Concord and Payback have been terminated. Additionally, highly anticipated titles such as The Last of Us: Factions, Spider-Man: The Great Web, and a game set in the God of War universe developed by Bluepoint Games have also been canceled.

Here's Sony's list of canceled games:

  • Concord (didn't live up to expectations)
  • God of War by Bluepoint Games
  • Bend Studio's multiplayer game
  • The Last of Us: Factions
  • Spider-Man: The Great Web by Insomniac Games
  • Twisted Metal by Firesprite
  • Unannounced fantasy game from London Studio
  • Payback by Bungie
  • Networking project from Deviation Games

These canceled projects were central to Sony's strategy to enter the games-as-a-service market. The gaming community has expressed significant dissatisfaction, feeling that Sony may have been too focused on following industry trends and neglecting its traditional strengths. As a result, projects from Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games are now expected to be delayed by several years.
