The HBO adaptation of The Last of Us Part II will portray Abby differently than her video game counterpart. Showrunner Neil Druckmann explains that actress Kaitlyn Dever didn't need the same physical build because the show's narrative prioritizes drama over the moment-to-moment violent action that defined Abby's gameplay in the game. Druckmann notes that the game required distinct gameplay mechanics for Ellie and Abby—Ellie's agility contrasted with Abby's brute strength. This physical distinction is less crucial in the show's adaptation, allowing for a different focus.
Fellow showrunner Craig Mazin adds that this presents an opportunity to explore a more physically vulnerable Abby whose inner strength is emphasized. The show will delve into the origins and manifestation of her formidable nature.
This adaptation's approach hints at a multi-season arc for Part II, unlike Season 1's single-season coverage of the first game. Mazin previously indicated the abundance of story in Part II, suggesting a natural breakpoint after seven episodes in Season 2, though Season 3 isn't yet confirmed.
The character of Abby has unfortunately been the target of significant online toxicity, with harassment directed at Naughty Dog employees, including Druckmann and Laura Bailey (Abby's voice actress). This included threats and abuse extending to their families. HBO acknowledged this concerning reception, providing Dever with additional security during filming. Actress Isabel Merced (Dina) reminds viewers that Abby is a fictional character, highlighting the absurdity of the real-world hatred directed at her.
