Unfrozen Studio, the developers behind Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era, have unveiled further details about the intriguing Swarm faction, following the initial teaser. The team delved into the inspiration behind this unique castle, tracing the evolution from the initially conceived "Inferno" faction to the final, chilling "Swarm" concept, and the unfolding narrative within the Jadame continent.
The Swarm's defining characteristic is its remarkable adaptability. Certain creatures possess abilities directly influenced by the opposing unit's level; the greater the disparity, the more devastating the damage inflicted. Others, like the mantises, strategically select one of three abilities per round. A noteworthy survival mechanism is the ability of creatures such as worms and locusts to consume corpses for healing and increased power – a skill also learnable by heroes.
In Olden Era, the insectoid race, previously only briefly alluded to in Might & Magic 8, assumes the mantle of the demonic threat. While respecting existing lore, the developers infused the Swarm with elements of body horror and occultism, transforming it from a mere insect colony into a terrifying cult devoted to a singular overlord. Each member is inextricably linked to a vast collective consciousness, existing solely to execute its master's commands.
Gameplay revolves around the "mono-faction" mechanic, rewarding players who field an army composed entirely of Swarm units, as these units synergistically enhance one another. A unique tactical element involves the summoning of cocoons, whose health directly correlates to the army's overall size. Upon hatching, these larvae provide temporary reinforcements, enabling dynamic battlefield adaptations.
The Swarm's aggressive playstyle is further emphasized by its corpse-devouring healing and empowerment abilities, coupled with unique attacks that fluctuate based on enemy strength. This dynamic approach fosters direct confrontations and presents players with a novel combat strategy.
