Deltarune Update: Chapter 4 Nearing Completion, but Release Still Distant
Undertale creator Toby Fox recently shared a development update on Deltarune in his newsletter, revealing significant progress but also highlighting the challenges ahead before the release of Chapters 3 and 4.
While Chapter 4 is nearing completion, with all maps finished and battles playable, some polishing remains. Fox noted needing minor cutscene improvements, battle balancing, visual enhancements, background additions, and improved ending sequences for certain battles. Despite this, he considers Chapter 4 largely playable, receiving positive feedback from playtesters.
The multi-platform and multilingual release presents significant hurdles. Fox emphasized the increased effort required for a paid release compared to the free initial chapters. The team faces several key tasks before launch:
- Testing new features
- Finalizing PC and console versions
- Japanese localization
- Comprehensive bug testing
Chapter 3 development is complete (as previously announced). Interestingly, early work on Chapter 5 has already begun, with map creation and battle design underway.
Although a specific release date remains unannounced, the newsletter offered a glimpse into upcoming content, including dialogue snippets, character descriptions (Elnina), and a new item (GingerGuard). Fox confirmed that Chapters 3 and 4 combined will be longer than the first two chapters, further fueling fan anticipation.
While the wait continues, Fox expressed confidence that future chapter releases will be more streamlined after the launch of Chapters 3 and 4.
