Sony Slammed by Ex-PlayStation Director for Omitting Until Dawn Writers from Movie Credits

By OliverMay 03,2025

A former PlayStation narrative director, Kim MacAskill, has launched a petition urging the creators of the Until Dawn movie to properly credit the game's original writers. Highlighted by Eurogamer, MacAskill's petition calls on Sony to set a new standard in IP crediting, particularly for transmedia adaptations.

In her petition, MacAskill expressed her frustration over the lack of recognition for the game developers who crafted the iconic Until Dawn game. She criticized Sony's current crediting approach, which she described as simply stating "based on the Sony game" without acknowledging the specific individuals who contributed to its creation. "They spent years breaking their brains to make something incredible, and the world DESERVES to know their names... instead… No credit. No thanks. No honor," she stated.

MacAskill elaborated further on a LinkedIn post, drawing a comparison between the crediting of HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us, which credits both Naughty Dog and Neil Druckmann, and the Until Dawn movie. She recounted being told by Sony executives that her own IP would never be credited to her due to her salaried status, which she found unjust compared to the treatment of others within the company.

She emphasized her desire for proper credit and potential ownership rights in adaptations, advocating for Sony to revise its approach to IP crediting. MacAskill suggested that providing an executive producer credit or equivalent acknowledgment would honor the creators whose passion and vision have transformed the entertainment landscape.

"Let's advocate not only for the Until Dawn creators but for the integrity of the industry," she urged. "By ensuring that creative voices are properly recognized, we can continue to inspire future generations of creators who dare to dream beyond current constraints. Sign this petition to urge Sony… and stand with all game creators… demanding well-deserved recognition in transmedia narratives."

In related news, Until Dawn Remastered is reportedly set to be one of the PlayStation Plus games for May 2025, possibly as a promotional move for the recently released Until Dawn movie. However, the movie received a lukewarm reception, earning a 5/10 rating from IGN, with the review stating, "Until Dawn is more disappointing than deadly, leaving all the promise of the horror game behind for a jumble of horror-movie re-creations."
