Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment has made the tough decision to cancel an unannounced incubation project this week, resulting in layoffs of an unspecified number of team members involved in the project. The news initially surfaced through a LinkedIn post by a former production coordinator, who shared their experience and joined the search for new opportunities in the gaming industry.
IGN independently verified the cancellation of this multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS) project. The project was a spin-off developed by a team that previously worked on a now-canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. While the exact number of affected employees remains undisclosed, sources have described the layoffs as "small." Additionally, at least one individual associated with the project has confirmed on LinkedIn that their exit was voluntary.
This development is part of a broader wave of project cancellations, layoffs, and restructuring efforts within Electronic Arts (EA). The trend began in 2023 with significant job cuts at BioWare and Codemasters. A year ago, EA announced the layoff of 670 employees across the company and the termination of several projects, including the Star Wars FPS. This led to approximately two dozen job losses at Respawn. Since then, BioWare has undergone restructuring, with developers reassigned to other projects and further layoffs of key personnel.
IGN has reached out to Electronic Arts for a statement on these developments.
