Voice actress Ashly Burch, known for her portrayal of Aloy in the *Horizon* series, recently addressed a leaked video showcasing AI-powered Aloy. This prompted her to highlight the crucial demands of striking voice actors.
Last week, The Verge reported on a Sony internal video demonstrating AI technology using Aloy. The video, since deleted, featured Sony Interactive Entertainment's Sharwin Raghoebardajal interacting with an AI-generated Aloy. The AI's voice and facial animations were noticeably robotic and lacked Burch's performance.

Burch confirmed seeing the video and stated that Guerrilla Games assured her the demo wasn't representative of active development and didn't utilize her performance data. This seemingly rules out AI Aloy for potential future *Horizon* titles. However, she emphasized that Guerrilla and Sony own the Aloy character.
Burch expressed concern about the impact of AI on performance art, using the video as a platform to discuss the ongoing voice actor strike. SAG-AFTRA's recent update highlighted the ongoing difficulties in negotiations regarding AI protections for voice actors.
Burch stated the key demands are consent for AI usage, fair compensation, and transparency regarding AI implementation. She voiced concern about the lack of recourse for actors if the strike fails to secure these protections, emphasizing her love for the industry and desire for its future.
She clarified that her concern wasn't with the technology itself or companies wanting to use it, but rather the lack of protective measures from the bargaining group. She strongly supports the strike, believing it necessary to protect the future of voice acting careers. Burch highlighted the availability of temporary union contracts offering the desired protections, urging game companies to sign them.
Generative AI's use in the video game industry has sparked controversy due to ethical and rights concerns, along with its limitations in producing high-quality content. Despite failures like Keywords Studio's AI-driven game experiment, many companies are incorporating generative AI. Activision's use of AI in *Call of Duty: Black Ops 6* is one example, amidst player backlash.
The voice actor strike is impacting numerous games. Reports suggest unvoiced NPCs in titles like *Destiny 2* and *World of Warcraft*, and *Call of Duty: Black Ops 6* character recasting following player concerns. Two *Zenless Zone Zero* voice actors recently discovered their replacements through patch notes.
Asad Qizilbash, Head of PlayStation Productions and Head of Product at PlayStation Studios, recently argued that AI's use in games is important for younger generations seeking personalized experiences.
