Ambitious Minecraft Competitor Hytale Canceled After Nearly 7 Years of Development: 'This Is Not the Outcome Any of Us Wanted'

Hytale, the highly anticipated Minecraft competitor unveiled in 2018, has been officially canceled as its developer winds down operations.

Hypixel Studios revealed that development on this ambitious, Riot Games-backed sandbox RPG had concluded, and the studio itself was in the process of closing up shop.

First announced in December 2018 with a trailer boasting over 61 million views on YouTube, Hytale promised an immersive experience. Here is how it was originally described:

Hytale merges the expansive freedom of a sandbox game with the rich depth of roleplaying, drawing players into a procedurally generated world filled with towering structures and intricate dungeons that offer rewarding adventures. Featuring intuitive yet powerful tools for everything from detailed block-by-block building to custom scripting and minigame creation, Hytale empowers creativity at every turn.

The hype surrounding Hytale was driven by the developers' proven track record; they were co-founders of Hypixel, one of the most influential Minecraft servers globally. Riot Games, known for League of Legends, invested in the project and eventually acquired the studio.

However, the dream of releasing Hytale has now come to an end. “This is not the outcome any of us — at Hypixel or at Riot — wanted,” read a statement from co-founder Noxy on the official website. “But after years of pushing forward, adapting, and exploring every possible path, it became clear we couldn’t bring Hytale to life in a way that truly delivered on its promise.”

So, what led to this decision? According to Noxy, Hytale’s technical ambitions grew increasingly complex. Even following a complete engine reboot, the team realized “Hytale still wasn’t as far along as it needed to be.”

“It became clear we’d need significantly more time to reach a state where it could fully support our ambitious vision for the game,” Noxy added.

Alternatives like reducing the scope or delaying release were rejected because they “would have meant compromising on what made Hytale special from the start.” “It wouldn’t have been the game we set out to make,” Noxy explained, “and it wouldn’t have been the game you deserve.”

Riot Games attempted to secure new investors to save the project, but these efforts ultimately fell flat. Affected staff members will receive generous severance packages and resources to support their next career moves.

This cancellation announcement follows closely on the heels of a spring 2025 development update from Hypixel, which showcased progress made in early 2024. The studio also finally unveiled a new character teased at the end of 2023, highlighting significant improvements within the updated engine.
