Take-Two Boss Says 'Legacy' Civilization Audience Will Eventually Come Around on Civilization 7 Amid 'Mixed' Steam User Reviews

By JacobFeb 12,2025

Civilization 7's launch has garnered mixed Steam reviews, but Take-Two's CEO remains optimistic. While early access players (often hardcore fans) have voiced concerns about the user interface, limited map variety, and missing features, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick believes the game's core audience will eventually embrace it.

The game's current Steam reviews reflect these initial concerns, citing UI issues and a lack of map diversity. Firaxis has acknowledged this feedback and pledged improvements, including UI enhancements, the addition of team-based multiplayer, and more map types.

Zelnick cited Metacritic's 81 score and numerous reviews exceeding 90 as positive indicators. He acknowledged negative reviews, such as Eurogamer's 2/5 score, but emphasized that the "legacy Civ audience" often initially reacts cautiously to significant changes before ultimately appreciating the innovation. He described the early performance as "very encouraging."

Zelnick's comments likely allude to Civilization 7's revolutionary three-age campaign structure (Antiquity, Exploration, Modern). Each Age transition involves selecting a new civilization, choosing which legacies to carry over, and witnessing world evolution—a novel feature in the Civilization franchise.

Despite the positive outlook, Firaxis faces the challenge of improving player sentiment, particularly on Steam. A strong Steam user review rating is vital for the game's success, impacting both public perception and platform visibility. Therefore, addressing the reported issues promptly is crucial for the game's long-term performance.
