Sony's AI Predicts Your Next Button Press

By ConnorMar 12,2025

Sony's latest patent hints at a potential game-changer for future PlayStation consoles: a latency-reducing system powered by AI and additional sensors. The current generation, exemplified by the PlayStation 5 Pro's PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), while capable of impressive upscaling, can introduce latency with technologies like frame generation. This compromises responsiveness, a crucial aspect for gamers.

Competitors AMD and Nvidia have already tackled this with Radeon Anti-Lag and Nvidia Reflex, respectively. Now, Sony's patent, WO2025010132, titled "TIMED INPUT/ACTION RELEASE," proposes a solution focusing on predicting user inputs.

The patent details a system combining a machine-learning AI model that anticipates player actions with an external sensor, potentially a camera observing the controller. The AI uses this sensor data to predict the next button press, minimizing the delay between input and in-game execution. The patent suggests the sensor could also be integrated directly into a controller button, perhaps leveraging analog inputs, a technology Sony has championed.

While the exact implementation in a hypothetical PlayStation 6 remains uncertain – patents rarely translate directly into final products – the patent demonstrates Sony's commitment to mitigating latency issues. This is particularly relevant given the increasing popularity of frame generation technologies like FSR 3 and DLSS 3, which often introduce latency. The benefits would be most noticeable in fast-paced games requiring both high frame rates and low latency, such as twitch shooters.

Whether this technology finds its way into future hardware remains to be seen, but it signifies Sony's proactive approach to enhancing the gaming experience by addressing a key performance challenge.
