Scarlett Johansson Disavows Thunderbolts* Role

By MilaJan 16,2026

Scarlett Johansson remains a steadfast supporter, but it appears she has no immediate plans to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, she recently requested the removal of an executive producer credit she received for Thunderbolts*.

During a conversation with Thunderbolts* star David Harbour for Interview Magazine, the Black Widow actress explained, “I asked to have my credit removed because I wasn't involved.” Johansson, who had not yet seen the film (the interview took place on its release day), revealed this after Harbour—who plays Red Guardian in the movie—pointed out her listed producer role.

Harbour teased, "You hated the film that much?" She quickly replied, "No, you're just wanting that to be the case," and confirmed she is "proud" of the team behind the project.

According to IMDB, Johansson is no longer credited as an executive producer on the film, which premiered earlier last month.

In a recent Deadline interview, the actress expressed continued interest in directing an MCU project, even if she does not plan to return as an actor.

"Even producing Black Widow and contributing to its story development, especially the dynamic between Natasha and Yelena," she noted. "There is a way to preserve themes like human connection, family, and disappointment—ideas we explored in [Eleanor the Great]—while operating within a massive universe. It’s possible… and yes, it would be fun.”

Marvel's promotion for Thunderbolts* included officially rebranding the film as New Avengers shortly after release. The studio even brought the on-screen conflict between Sam Wilson’s Avengers and the new superhero team into real-world marketing. Thunderbolts* sets the stage for Phase 6’s launch with The Fantastic Four: First Steps this July.
