Back in early April, fans eagerly awaiting the Nintendo Switch 2 noticed a fleeting mention of Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) on the system's informational pages, which quickly vanished. Nintendo has since clarified the situation surrounding VRR support on the Nintendo Switch 2.
In a statement provided to NintendoLife, Nintendo corrected the initial information about VRR: "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for the error." When questioned about potential VRR support for docked mode in a future firmware update, the company responded with, "We have nothing to announce on this topic."
This means that while the Nintendo Switch 2 does offer VRR as an option when used in handheld mode, those connecting their new console to a TV will not have access to this feature at launch. The clarification follows weeks of confusion, as the original mention of VRR was spotted and then promptly removed. Over time, references to VRR were systematically erased from various sites, a process documented by Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie.
While this news might be a letdown for those hoping for VRR support in TV mode from the get-go, it's not necessarily the end of the line. Sony, for instance, introduced VRR support to the PS5 via a post-launch update, suggesting that Nintendo might follow suit with the Switch 2.
In other Nintendo Switch 2 developments, the company has recently announced a lineup of games slated for free performance upgrades, including titles like Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Additionally, Nintendo of America's president, Doug Bowser, has reassured fans that there will be sufficient Switch 2 units available to meet demand "through the holidays."
