Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: A Turn-Based RPG Inspired by Classics

Sandfall Interactive's upcoming turn-based RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is generating significant excitement. Drawing inspiration from classic JRPGs, Final Fantasy, and Persona, the game blends turn-based combat with real-time elements, creating a unique gameplay experience.

The game's Belle Epoque setting and high-fidelity graphics are key differentiators. Creative director Guillaume Broche, a self-proclaimed fan of turn-based games, sought to create a title that combined his love for the genre with modern visuals. He cited Atlus' Persona and Square Enix's Octopath Traveller as stylistic influences, inspiring him to develop a game that hadn't yet been done.

Expedition 33's combat system requires both strategic planning and quick reflexes. Players utilize turn-based commands but must also react in real-time to enemy attacks. This innovative approach has drawn comparisons to the Persona series, Final Fantasy, and Sea of Stars.

While acknowledging Persona's influence on camera movement and menu design, Broche emphasized the stronger impact of the Final Fantasy series, particularly Final Fantasy VIII, IX, and X, on the game's core mechanics. He clarified that the game is an homage, not a direct imitation, reflecting his personal gaming history and creative vision.

The open world allows for dynamic party switching and the use of unique traversal abilities to solve environmental puzzles. Broche expressed a desire for players to experiment with unconventional character builds and strategies.
