Tarkir's Dragonstorm Unveiled in Magic: The Gathering Preview

By MadisonApr 09,2025

The highly anticipated Magic: The Gathering set, Tarkir: Dragonstorm, is set to release on April 11 and is now available for pre-order. This set takes players back to the tumultuous plane of Tarkir, where ancient dragons clash with the five clans each led by a Khan. As a proud owner of a Scion of the Ur-Dragon Commander deck, I'm eager to see how the new additions from Dragonstorm will enhance my gameplay and possibly irk my friends.

What to Expect From Tarkir: Dragonstorm

Tarkir: Dragonstorm introduces players to a world where the five clans—Abzan Houses (White, Black, Green), Jeskai Way (Blue, Red, White), Mardu Horde (Red, White, Black), Sultai Brood (Black, Green, Blue), and Temur Frontier (Green, Blue, Red)—continue their eternal struggle against formidable dragons. Wizards of the Coast is unveiling new mechanics tailored to each clan, promising a fresh deck-building experience:

  • Jeskai Way introduces Flurry, rewarding players for casting a second spell in a turn, regardless of whose turn it is.
  • Sultai Brood brings Renew, allowing players to exile a card from their graveyard to grant counters to surviving creatures.
  • Mardu Horde uses Mobilize to create temporary creatures that vanish at the end of the turn, enhancing their aggressive tactics.
  • Temur Frontier features Harmonize, a mechanic similar to Flashback, enabling cards to be replayed from the graveyard at a reduced cost by tapping creatures.
  • Abzan Houses employs Endure, which triggers when a non-token creature dies, providing +1/+1 counters and other benefits, as exemplified by Anafenza, Undying Lineage.

The dragons of Tarkir are not to be outdone, with new mechanics like Omen and Behold. Omen allows cards to be cast as creatures or as instant or sorcery spells, with the spell option shuffling the card back into the deck for another draw opportunity. Behold activates when a dragon is revealed from your hand or already on the battlefield, as seen with Sarkhan, Dragon Ascendant, who generates a Treasure token upon being played.

The dragons are the stars of Tarkir: Dragonstorm, with Betor, Kin to All (2WBG) standing out as a formidable force. Betor triggers different effects at the end of your turn based on the total toughness of creatures you control, ranging from drawing cards to untapping all your creatures or even causing opponents to lose half their life. With a base toughness of 7, Betor easily triggers at least the card draw effect, and when paired with heavyweights like Utvara Hellkite or Ancient Gold Dragon, the life loss becomes a game-changer.

Ugin returns as a colorless planeswalker in Ugin, Eye of the Storms (7), poised to become a staple in colorless decks, particularly Eldrazi builds. His passive ability exiles target permanents when you cast a colorless spell, and his -11 ability allows you to search your library for any number of colorless non-land cards, exile them, and cast them for free until the end of the turn. With seven starting loyalty and a +2 ability, Ugin can quickly reach his ultimate ability if properly defended.

Aside from the Final Fantasy crossover set, Tarkir: Dragonstorm is my most anticipated Magic release this year. With less than a month until its launch, much of the set remains a mystery, but my Scion deck is already primed for a significant upgrade. I'm hopeful for the return of legendary dragons like Atarka and Ojutai, or perhaps the introduction of an exciting new five-color dragon. Tarkir: Dragonstorm is shaping up to be an exhilarating addition to the Magic: The Gathering universe when it arrives on April 11.
