'Oblivion' Remake Details Leak, Exciting Features Revealed

By OwenFeb 23,2025

Rumors of an Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remake, slated for a 2025 release, have surfaced online, with purported details leaking from a former Virtuos employee, according to Mp1st. Microsoft has declined to comment.

Mp1st's report claims Virtuos utilized Unreal Engine 5 for the remake, suggesting a substantial overhaul rather than a simple remaster. Alleged gameplay alterations include modifications to Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reactions, and the HUD.

The Blocking system, reportedly inspired by action and Soulslike games, addresses criticisms of the original's "boring" and "frustrating" mechanics. Sneak icons now boast enhanced visibility, damage calculations have been refined, and Stamina depletion-induced knockdowns are supposedly harder to trigger. A redesigned HUD aims for improved clarity, while added hit reactions enhance combat feedback. Archery mechanics have received a modernization across both first and third-person perspectives.

An Oblivion remaster was initially mentioned in 2023 FTC vs. Microsoft trial documents, listing several unannounced Bethesda titles. This July 2020 list, predating Microsoft's ZeniMax Media acquisition, included:

Fiscal Year 2022:

  • Oblivion Remaster
  • Indiana Jones game

Fiscal Year 2023:

  • Doom Year Zero and DLC
  • Project Kestrel
  • Project Platinum

Fiscal Year 2024:

  • The Elder Scrolls VI
  • Project Kestrel: Expansion
  • Licensed IP Game
  • Fallout 3 Remaster
  • Ghostwire: Tokyo Sequel
  • Dishonored 3
  • DOOM Year Zero DLC

Several titles faced delays or cancellation. Doom Year Zero became Doom: The Dark Ages, launching this year. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle debuted in December 2024, and The Elder Scrolls VI significantly missed its projected release window.

The Oblivion project's scope may have evolved from a remaster to a full-fledged remake. Its official unveiling is highly anticipated.

Platform speculation is rife. Given Microsoft's multiplatform strategy and the impending Nintendo Switch 2, Oblivion's release may extend beyond PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.

Leaker NateTheHate, known for accurate Nintendo Switch 2 predictions, suggests a June release for the Oblivion remake, potentially coinciding with the Switch 2 launch.

Microsoft's upcoming Xbox Developer Direct will feature id Software showcasing Doom: The Dark Ages. While a new game from an undisclosed Japanese developer is also teased, it's unlikely to be Oblivion. Windows Central's Jez Corden describes it as a "new entry in a legendary Japanese IP."
