Naughty Dog's 'Intergalactic' Delayed Past 2026, Druckmann Says 'It's Incredible'

By IsabellaMay 04,2025

As fans eagerly await the release of *The Witcher 4*, set for 2027, they can expect a similar timeline for Naughty Dog's newly announced game, *Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet*. Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier confirmed on ResetEra that neither title will see the light of day in 2026, pushing *Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet* to a 2027 release at the earliest. This delay raises questions about which PlayStation console the game will target—PS5, the upcoming PS6, or possibly as a cross-gen title.

If *Intergalactic* launches directly on the PS6, Naughty Dog risks missing out on the PS5 generation for brand new games. So far, the studio has only released ports, remasters, and remakes on the current-gen console, including *The Last of Us Part II*, *Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection*, *The Last of Us Part I*, and *The Last of Us Part II Remastered*.

*Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet* was unveiled at The Game Awards 2024, featuring a star-studded cast with Tati Gabrielle from the *Uncharted* movie as the protagonist Jordan A. Mun, and Kumail Nanjiani from *Marvel's Eternals* as Colin Graves. Fans have meticulously analyzed the trailer to identify additional cast members, with a crew photo hinting at further characters.

Earlier this month, Neil Druckmann, the director of *The Last of Us*, shared more insights into the development of *Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet*. In an interview with Alex Garland, the writer of *28 Days Later*, Druckmann revealed that the game had been in development for four years. He discussed the creative decisions behind their previous game, *The Last of Us Part II*, and how they influenced the new project.

"I joke about this with the team. We made a game, *The Last of Us 2*, we made certain creative decisions that got us a lot of hate. A lot of people love it, but a lot of people hate that game," Druckmann remarked, to which Garland humorously responded, "Who gives a shit?" Druckmann continued, "Exactly. But the joke is like, you know what, let's do something that people won't care as much about — let's make a game about faith and religion."

*Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet* is set in an alternate historical timeline and revolves around a significant religion that has evolved over time. The narrative follows a bounty hunter named Jordan A. Mun, who crash-lands on a mysterious planet from which communication has been lost for centuries. Druckmann emphasized the game's focus on exploration and uncovering the planet's history, aiming to create a sense of isolation and confusion for the player.

With a projected release in 2027, *Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet* will have been in development for six years by the time it launches. Despite the lengthy wait, Druckmann assured IGN at the premiere of *The Last of Us* Season 2 that the game is not only playable but "really good." He teased, "I will say we are playing it at the office and it's incredible. It's really good. I'm so excited to finally put gameplay out into the world and show people about it, because we just showed you the very, very, very tip on the iceberg. The game goes pretty deep beyond that."
