The Flash Director Andy Muschietti Says It Failed Because 'A Lot of People Just Don’t Care About the Flash as a Character'

Andy Muschietti, the director behind "The Flash," has openly discussed the film's disappointing box office performance, attributing it to a lack of broad appeal, particularly to the character of the Flash. In an interview with Radio Tu, as translated by Variety, Muschietti explained that "The Flash" did not successfully attract "the four quadrants"—a term used in the movie industry to describe the goal of appealing to all demographic groups, from males and females under 25 to those over 25. He noted that with a hefty budget of $200 million, Warner Bros. expected the film to draw a wide audience, including even the least likely viewers such as grandparents.

"The Flash failed, among all the other reasons, because it wasn’t a movie that appealed to all four quadrants. It failed at that," Muschietti stated. He further elaborated on private conversations revealing that many people, especially women across both age groups, simply do not connect with the Flash as a character. This lack of connection, he believes, significantly impacted the film's performance.

Muschietti's mention of "all the other reasons" for the film's failure likely includes its negative critical reception, the controversy over its use of CGI to bring back deceased actors without family consent, and its positioning at the tail end of the now-defunct DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Despite these setbacks, DC Studios seems to have confidence in Muschietti, as he is slated to direct "The Brave and the Bold," the inaugural Batman film in the newly restructured DC Universe under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
