Citizen Sleeper 2: Choosing the Best Class for You

By EvelynMay 23,2025

At the start of *Citizen Sleeper 2*, you'll be presented with the exciting opportunity to choose from three distinct classes: Operator, Machinist, and Extractor. Your choice will significantly impact your gameplay experience, so let's dive into the details to help you decide which class aligns best with your play style.

Which Citizen Sleeper 2 Class Should You Choose?

The best class for you hinges on your preferred play style. After completing the game, here’s my take on the three classes, examining their abilities and considering their role-play potential.

Operator

They cannot level up Endure. Their unique ability lets them accrue Stress in exchange for re-rolling their lowest dice.

While I appreciate the Operator, it's not my top pick among the three classes. As you advance and upgrade your abilities, the Operator becomes more powerful. However, I found the early game more challenging than expected. Interface is a valuable skill, so if you can navigate the initial struggles, the Operator is a solid choice. Yet, the ability to re-roll the lowest dice isn’t always ideal, as you might still end up with a poor roll.

From a role-play perspective, the Operator is versatile, allowing you to embody a wide range of characters and play styles.

Machinist

An image of the Machinist class in Citizen Sleeper 2 as part of a guide to which class players should choose. The Machinist class starts with a + in Engineer, base levels in Interface and Intuit, and no points in Endure. They cannot level up Engage. Their ability allows them to gain Stress in exchange for adding +2 to their lowest dice, and they also lose 2 Stress on a Positive outcome. As *Citizen Sleeper 2* progresses, they can further enhance their dice and reduce Stress.

I chose the Machinist for my first playthrough of *Citizen Sleeper 2*, and it quickly became my favorite. The ability to boost dice and manage Stress effectively is invaluable, especially in tough situations. The game often requires Engineer and Interface checks, which the Machinist excels at, making it easier to overcome challenges without relying heavily on crew members. The ability to reduce Stress is also a game-changer, as managing this mechanic can be quite challenging.

For those intrigued by the mechanical and technical aspects of the game's universe, the Machinist class in *Citizen Sleeper 2* is the perfect fit from a role-play perspective.

Extractor

An image of the Extractor class in Citizen Sleeper 2 as part of a guide to which class players should choose. The Extractor class begins with a + in Endure, base levels in Engineer and Engage, and no points in Interface. They cannot level up Intuit. Their ability allows them to gain Stress in exchange for adding +2 to the lowest dice of their crew. As the game progresses, they can upgrade this ability to further boost the roles of different crew members.

The Extractor's ability is quite effective. Managing your crew during Contracts can be tricky, and the Extractor makes these endeavors less risky. Starting with a bonus to Endure is beneficial, given the numerous checks requiring this skill in the game. However, I found that many crew members I recruited had high Endure and Engage skills, which somewhat diluted the Extractor's unique advantage.

From a role-play perspective, if you're drawn to a more rugged, combat-focused character, the Extractor in *Citizen Sleeper 2* is the class for you.

And that concludes our comprehensive guide to choosing the best class in *Citizen Sleeper 2*. May your journey through the game be thrilling and rewarding!
