SEGA's Latest Financial Report Hints at Global Launch for Persona 5: The Phantom X
SEGA's recent financial report for the fiscal year ending March 2024 revealed that Persona 5: The Phantom X (P5X), the popular gacha spin-off, is being considered for a global release. The report indicated that the game's initial performance in Japan is meeting expectations and that international expansion is under active consideration.
Currently in Open Beta, Limited Regions
Initially soft-launched in China on April 12th, 2024, and subsequently in Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea, and Taiwan on April 18th, P5X is currently in open beta. Developed by Black Wings Game Studio (a subsidiary of Perfect World Games), the mobile and PC title casts players as "Wonder," a high school student who moonlights as a Persona-wielding Phantom Thief, fighting societal injustices. Wonder initially wields the Persona Janosik, inspired by Slovakian folklore and embodying a Robin Hood-esque archetype. The game features familiar faces from the Persona 5 universe, including Joker, alongside a new character, YUI.
Gameplay and Features
P5X retains the core turn-based combat, social simulation, and dungeon crawling elements of the mainline Persona series, but incorporates a gacha system for character acquisition. A new roguelike game mode, "Heart Rail," reminiscent of Honkai: Star Rail's Simulated Universe, has been introduced, offering players varied power-ups, maps, and rewards. A gameplay showcase by popular Persona content creator, Faz, highlights this new mode. [Link to Faz's video showcasing Heart Rail]
SEGA's Financial Success and Future Plans
SEGA reported strong sales for its "Full Game" category, including titles like Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Persona 3 Reload, and Football Manager 2024. The company also announced structural changes, creating a new "Gaming Business" segment that will focus on expanding its online gaming presence, particularly in North America. For FY2025, SEGA projects increased sales and profits, with the Full Game segment expected to generate approximately 597 billion USD. A new Sonic title is also anticipated for next year. The positive financial outlook and strategic shift towards online gaming suggest a promising future for SEGA, increasing the likelihood of a global release for P5X.
