The return of Marvel vs. Capcom 2's original characters in a new title is "always a possibility," according to Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto, who spoke at EVO 2024, the premier global fighting game tournament.

No new crossover fighting game has emerged since Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite. However, Capcom is set to release a remastered collection, "Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics," produced by Matsumoto, later this year.

The Marvel vs. Capcom series, part of the Versus lineup, showcases characters from both Capcom and Marvel universes. During the June 2024 Nintendo Direct, Capcom revealed a trailer for the new collection, featuring six classic titles, including Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

This iconic game introduced three unique characters: Amingo, a cactus-like creature; Ruby Heart, a daring sky pirate and protagonist; and SonSon, the monkey girl descended from the hero of Capcom's 1980s arcade game SonSon. These characters have been absent from recent series entries, appearing only briefly, such as on wanted posters in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 or as playable cards in Capcom's card fighter games.

Speaking to fans at EVO 2024, Matsumoto hinted at a potential comeback for these characters, noting the arcade classics collection as a key opportunity. "There’s always a chance," he said through a translator. "This collection allows more players to rediscover characters exclusive to the Versus series."

He further suggested that strong fan interest could see these original characters appear beyond the Versus series. "If enough fans show enthusiasm, we might see them in Street Fighter 6 or other fighting games. Re-releasing these titles helps introduce the IP to new audiences and fuels creative possibilities for our team," Matsumoto explained.

Capcom has been planning the new collection for "three to four years," Matsumoto revealed. "We’ve been in talks with Marvel for some time. Previously, the timing wasn’t right, but now we’ve made it happen," he said.

He emphasized the team’s long-standing desire to re-release past Capcom-Marvel titles. "It’s been a goal for years. It was all about finding the right moment and ensuring alignment with all parties," Matsumoto noted.

Matsumoto also expressed ambitions for a new Versus series title and other classic fighting games not yet supported with modern features like rollback netcode. "We have big dreams, but it’s about taking things one step at a time," he said.

The producer highlighted Capcom’s interest in bringing other legacy fighting games to modern platforms. "We know fans want these titles re-released, and we share that passion," he told IGN.

"Our current focus is re-releasing these classic games to spark excitement in the community. Collaboration with external partners and scheduling challenges may take time, but re-releasing these titles is the best way to energize fans," Matsumoto concluded.
