One month post-launch, only a small fraction of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered players have finished the main questline. This isn’t shocking for a game like this—players report being engrossed in side activities instead.
I’m among them! Since the surprise release on April 22, I’ve been immersed in Oblivion Remastered. After exiting the sewers and delivering the Amulet of Kings to Jauffre at Weynon Priory, I’ve sidestepped the main quest entirely. I’ve joined the Fighters Guild, roamed Cyrodiil, and tackled numerous side quests. I even attempted to break out of the map’s boundaries, inspired by another player’s feat.
Why skip the main quest? The side quests are incredibly engaging (no spoilers here), and I’m deliberately avoiding tougher segments like Kvatch while keeping my leveling minimal for now.
So, I’m savoring Oblivion until I’m ready to tackle the main story. But with a Bethesda game like this, is there a “right” way to play? That’s their charm—you play your way, and it just works.
Many players echo this sentiment. “I’m too busy hunting SLAUGHTERFISH in Lake Rumare,” redditor MrCrispyFriedChicken shared, reacting to the low completion stats for Oblivion Remastered’s main quest.
“I’ve logged 160 hours, and Kvatch is still on hold,” said Roffear. “I love the Oblivion gates, so I’m holding off on the main quest until I’ve closed all 60 in my world,” Ellert0 noted. “After 44 hours and an in-game year, I haven’t even reached Weynon Priory,” PlayaHatinIG-88 admitted. “Those Kvatch guards never had a chance.”
As of this article’s publication, only 2.97% of Xbox players and 4.4% of Steam players have completed the main questline. The gap likely stems from Xbox Game Pass, where players may try the game briefly before moving on, while Steam players, having purchased it, are more committed.

Despite over 4 million players, Oblivion Remastered’s completion rate remains low. Most video games, from sprawling RPGs like this to short campaigns like Call of Duty, see low completion rates. Many players drop off after the tutorial or an hour of play—such is gaming’s fleeting nature.
For Oblivion Remastered, the stats may be skewed as a remaster of a classic. If you completed the main quest 20 years ago, you might skip it now to enjoy the enhanced visuals and new features. One player even spent seven hours arranging books for a perfect domino effect.
Thaddeus122, nearly 100 hours in, hasn’t touched three main quests but has conquered the Arena and Mages Guild. The rest of their time? “Leveling, earning gold for houses, closing Oblivion gates, chasing Nirnroot, and doing smaller quests. Oh, and I avoid fast travel.”
