Marvel Rivals Issues Apology for Unfair Bans; Players Advocate for Expanded Character Ban System
NetEase, the developer of Marvel Rivals, recently issued a public apology for mistakenly banning numerous innocent players. The incident involved a mass ban targeting suspected cheaters, which inadvertently flagged several non-Windows users employing compatibility layers like those used by Mac, Linux, and Steam Deck players.
The erroneous bans, implemented on January 3rd, were subsequently lifted after NetEase identified the cause. The company acknowledged the inconvenience and urged players to report genuine cheating while offering an appeal process for wrongful bans. The reliance on compatibility layers, particularly Proton for SteamOS, is noted as a potential source of false positives in anti-cheat systems.
Separately, a significant player outcry concerns the limited availability of in-game character bans. Currently, this feature, which allows competitive teams to strategically remove specific characters from selection, is only available at Diamond rank and above.
Players, particularly those in lower ranks, express frustration at the lack of character bans, arguing it limits strategic depth and creates unbalanced matchups. Reddit discussions highlight the disparity, with players claiming the absence of bans hinders their ability to compete effectively against opponents with overpowered character selections. The sentiment is that extending the character ban system to all ranks would enhance gameplay balance, introduce strategic learning opportunities for newer players, and foster more diverse team compositions. NetEase has yet to publicly address this ongoing player concern.
