Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, is back in the game development scene, despite previous retirement plans. His latest endeavor aims to create a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy VI.
A New Chapter After Fantasian
Following the success of Fantasian Neo Dimension, initially released in 2021, Sakaguchi revealed in an interview with The Verge that he's embarking on a new project. While he initially intended Fantasian to be his final work, the positive experience working with his team has inspired him to continue. This new game, he states, will be "a successor to Final Fantasy VI," a sentiment echoed in subsequent interviews. He describes the upcoming title as "part two of my farewell note," suggesting it will likely be his final project.
Development Update and Speculation
In a 2024 Famitsu interview, Sakaguchi confirmed the project's progress, estimating approximately two more years until completion. A June 2024 trademark filing for "FANTASIAN DARK AGE" by Mistwalker has fueled speculation of a Fantasian sequel, though this remains unconfirmed. The new game will reportedly maintain the fantasy RPG style characteristic of his previous works. No official title or details have been released.
Reunion with Square Enix
The recent collaboration with Square Enix for the multi-platform release of FANTASIAN Neo Dimension (December 2024) marked a significant event. Sakaguchi reflected on this partnership, highlighting the "fascinating experience" of returning to his roots. Despite this collaboration, he's expressed no desire to revisit the Final Fantasy franchise or his previous works, declaring himself a "consumer rather than a creator" in this regard.
The gaming community eagerly awaits further announcements regarding Sakaguchi’s final project, a game promising a fresh take on classic RPG elements.
