Localthunk, the developer behind the popular roguelike poker game Balatro, recently addressed a controversy on the game's subreddit involving AI-generated art. The issue stemmed from statements made by DrTankHead, a former moderator of the Balatro subreddit and current moderator of an NSFW Balatro subreddit. DrTankHead had indicated that AI-generated art would be allowed on both subreddits if properly labeled, following what they claimed was a discussion with Playstack staff.
However, Localthunk quickly clarified on Bluesky and in a detailed statement on the subreddit that neither they nor their publisher, Playstack, condone the use of AI-generated art. Localthunk emphasized their stance against AI art due to its potential harm to artists and confirmed the removal of DrTankHead from the moderation team. They also announced a ban on AI-generated images on the Balatro subreddit and promised to update the subreddit's rules and FAQ to reflect this policy.
In a follow-up, Playstack's communications director acknowledged that the previous rules could have been misinterpreted and should have been clearer. The remaining moderators are set to revise the language to prevent future confusion.
DrTankHead, after being removed as a moderator, posted on the NSFW Balatro subreddit, stating that they do not intend to make the subreddit AI-centric but are considering designating a specific day for posting non-NSFW AI-generated art. A user suggested that DrTankHead take a break from Reddit.
The use of generative AI remains a contentious issue in the video game and entertainment industries, especially amidst recent layoffs. Critics argue that AI poses ethical and rights issues and often fails to create content that resonates with audiences. For example, Keywords Studios attempted to develop an entirely AI-generated game, which ultimately failed due to AI's inability to replace human talent. Despite such setbacks, major companies like EA, Capcom, and Activision continue to explore AI's potential, with EA citing AI as central to its business and Activision using generative AI for some assets in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
