While Magic: The Gathering’s high-profile collaborations like Final Fantasy and Spider-Man have been grabbing attention, the upcoming Tarkir: Dragonstorm set is charging into view. Returning to the iconic Tarkir plane, this set introduces five new cards poised to make waves at next month’s draft tables. (The expansion is available for preorder now on Amazon).

These five cards form a cohesive “cycle,” unified by shared design elements across Magic’s five colors. Each is an affordable, common-rarity creature tied to one of Tarkir’s three-color clans, with abilities that both support clan strategies and convert mana into a clan-specific color.
“Three-color draft formats demand robust mana fixing across all rarities,” says Wizards of the Coast Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak. “We designed these creatures to let players build their board while simultaneously improving their mana base. Unlike tapped lands, which only generate mana and can slow you down, these cards keep you competitive while solving mana issues.”

Some recent Magic sets have faced criticism for leaning too heavily on thematic tropes, even when revisiting familiar planes. Tarkir: Dragonstorm, however, stands out for its focused return to the plane’s roots. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl notes that player feedback matters to Wizards of the Coast, but the vision for Tarkir was set before the release of Murders at Karlov Manor and remained steady.
“Our goal was to blend Dragons and Clans in a fresh way, emphasizing the Dragonstorms that define Tarkir,” Schehl says. “From the start, Lauren and I aimed to craft an authentic next chapter for this beloved plane, grounded in its core identity.”
Tarkir: Dragonstorm is available for preorder now, with a release slated for April 11 in both physical and digital formats, and in-store prerelease events starting April 4. Continue reading for the full interview with Wizards of the Coast’s Adam Prosak, Lauren Bond, and Forrest Schehl:
