Square Enix Cancels Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link

By ConnorJun 22,2025

Square Enix has officially canceled Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link, the mobile ARPG spin-off of its beloved action-RPG franchise. After multiple delays—including setbacks to its Android closed beta—the company has decided to halt development entirely and shift all focus toward the highly anticipated Kingdom Hearts IV.

Originally announced as a new entry set during an unexplored chapter in the Kingdom Hearts timeline, Missing-Link aimed to bring players back into the series’ signature blend of Disney worlds and dark fantasy storytelling. The game was designed with GPS-based mechanics and augmented reality elements, allowing players to engage in real-time battles using iconic keyblades against waves of Heartless across various global locations.

The integration of location-based gameplay was one of the most unique aspects of Missing-Link, though its exact implementation remained vague. While the idea of exploring different regions through GPS-triggered content intrigued fans, it’s possible that the ambitious concept proved too complex or impractical to fully realize, ultimately leading to the project's cancellation.

This isn’t the first time Square Enix has pulled the plug on a mobile title, and it likely won’t be the last. Over the years, the company has quietly retired several mobile projects—some before launch, others after struggling to gain traction. While Japan often embraces mobile adaptations of popular franchises, international audiences have proven harder to capture, even for globally recognized IPs like Kingdom Hearts.

In this case, it appears Square Enix determined that Missing-Link’s core design posed too many challenges. Rather than stretch resources thin across two major titles, the decision was made to consolidate creative efforts behind Kingdom Hearts IV, ensuring the next mainline entry receives the full attention it deserves.
