Sony Unveils New AAA PlayStation Studio

Summary

  • Sony has opened a new PlayStation studio in Los Angeles, California, as confirmed by a recent job listing.
  • The newly-established internal PlayStation studio is working on a high-profile original AAA IP for PS5.
  • Speculation suggests that the new PlayStation studio could be for a Bungie spin-off team or former Deviation Games co-founder Jason Blundell's team.

Sony has recently expanded its gaming empire by opening a new AAA game studio in the vibrant city of Los Angeles, California. This marks the 20th studio under the PlayStation first-party umbrella, and it's generating significant buzz as it works on a new, high-profile AAA IP for the PS5.

PlayStation's first-party studios, including powerhouses like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games, have long been celebrated within the gaming community for their innovative and captivating titles. The addition of this new studio only adds to the excitement, especially following PlayStation's recent acquisitions of talented teams such as Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite. This mysterious new studio is one to keep an eye on for any PlayStation enthusiast.

Located in the heart of Los Angeles, this yet-to-be-named PlayStation first-party studio is ambitiously crafting what they describe as a "ground-breaking" original AAA IP. The existence of this studio came to light through a job listing for a Project Senior Producer, which directly references a "newly-established AAA studio" in Los Angeles. While the exact identity of the team remains a subject of speculation, one theory posits it could be a spin-off team from Bungie, working on the Gummybears incubation project. This project was revealed during the Bungie layoffs in July 2024, with 155 staff members transitioning to Sony Interactive Entertainment in the following quarters.

PlayStation's Newest Internal Studio Might Have Been Salvaged From a Failed Partnership

Another strong contender for the studio's identity is the team led by Jason Blundell, a seasoned developer known for his work on Call of Duty: Black Ops. Blundell had previously co-founded Deviation Games, which was initially tasked with creating a new AAA IP for PS5. However, internal challenges led to Blundell's departure in 2022, and the studio's eventual closure in March 2024. Interestingly, many former Deviation Games employees were found to have joined PlayStation in May 2024, forming a new team under Blundell's leadership.

Given the timeline, it's plausible that Blundell's team is the one now housed in PlayStation's new AAA studio. What they're working on remains a mystery, but fans are hopeful it might be a continuation or a reboot of the project Deviation Games had been developing. While it may be several years before Sony officially unveils anything about this studio, the anticipation of another PlayStation first-party game is enough to keep fans eagerly waiting.
