Sony is actively developing a new adaptation of the iconic military sci-fi novel "Starship Troopers" by Robert A. Heinlein, as confirmed by multiple Hollywood sources including The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, and Variety. The project is being helmed by acclaimed director Neill Blomkamp, known for his work on films like "District 9," "Elysium," and "Chappie." Blomkamp will both write and direct this fresh take on Heinlein's 1959 classic.
This upcoming film is a distinct reboot and not a sequel or related to the 1997 cult classic directed by Paul Verhoeven, which famously satirized the original novel. Instead, Blomkamp's version aims to be a direct adaptation of Heinlein's source material, produced under Sony's Columbia Pictures.
The announcement of Blomkamp's involvement comes at an interesting time, as Sony has also recently revealed plans for a live-action adaptation of the popular PlayStation Studios game "Helldivers." The game, developed by Arrowhead, draws heavy inspiration from Verhoeven's "Starship Troopers," featuring a similar theme of cannon fodder soldiers defending a satirized fascist regime called Super Earth against alien bugs and other foes, all while promoting the concepts of Liberty and Managed Democracy.
This situation puts Sony in a unique position, as it now has two related projects in development: the new "Starship Troopers" film and the "Helldivers" movie. However, The Hollywood Reporter clarifies that Blomkamp’s project is not a remake of Verhoeven’s film but rather a return to the original tone and themes of Heinlein's novel, which some interpret as promoting the very ideals that Verhoeven's movie satirized.
As of now, neither the new "Starship Troopers" nor the "Helldivers" film has a confirmed release date, indicating that fans may have to wait a while before seeing these projects come to fruition. Blomkamp’s most recent work was the Sony-produced "Gran Turismo," an adaptation of the popular PlayStation driving simulation series.
