Skich Challenges Major App Stores

By GraceDec 26,2025

  • Skich is the newest player entering the alternative app store arena.
  • It is centered around gaming and incorporates a wide array of discovery features.
  • But can it stand out in an increasingly crowded marketplace?

As Apple's ecosystem opens up, a wave of new contenders is vying to become the first successful third-party app store for iOS. The latest entry is Skich, a gaming-focused alternative store aiming to compete with platforms like Apptoid by concentrating primarily on games rather than a broader range of applications.

Skich's main appeal lies in its discovery tools. The platform emphasizes three key elements: a personalized recommendation engine, a swipe-based browsing experience, and social integration with curated lists that let you see what your friends and users with similar preferences are playing.

Some of these features may feel familiar to Steam users, which isn't necessarily a drawback. One limitation of the Epic Games Store on iOS, inherited from its PC version, is the absence of the social and discovery features that platforms like Steam and, to a lesser degree, GOG, offer as standard.

That said, Skich does have a unique value proposition. However—and this is a significant caveat—I'm not convinced that alone will be enough to ensure its success. As noted previously, one major challenge for new app stores entering the iOS landscape is persuading users to move away from what they already know.

Epic uses free games as an incentive, while Apptoid attracts users by offering a diverse selection of apps beyond games. So, can Skich achieve its goals by focusing on gamer-centric functionality? There's certainly potential, but success is far from guaranteed.

Nevertheless, with increased attention on third-party app stores from major publishers—such as the recent partnership between EA and Flexion—we may be heading toward a future where official stores take a back seat to emerging external platforms.
