SaveMultiVersus: Fans Rally Online Over Major Gameplay Updates

By JulianFeb 25,2025

MultiVersus' impending closure in May, after Season 5, hasn't dampened the enthusiasm of its player base. A recent update dramatically increased combat speed, a long-requested change, leading to a surge in positive player feedback and a social media campaign, #SaveMultiVersus.

The game's fifth and final season launched February 4th, introducing Aquaman and Lola Bunny as the last playable characters. However, the update's significant gameplay overhaul, focusing on faster movement and combat, has overshadowed the game's imminent demise. This fundamental shift, addressing years of player complaints about sluggish gameplay, has revitalized the game's appeal. A preview video showcasing the enhanced speed highlighted the considerable differences, with characters executing combos and traversing the screen with unprecedented fluidity. This marks a stark contrast to the criticized "floaty" gameplay of the 2022 beta and even the relaunch in May 2024.

Patch notes detail that the speed increase stems from a reduction in hit pause across most attacks. Numerous characters, including Morty, LeBron, Iron Giant, Bugs Bunny, and Black Adam, benefit from this change, particularly through faster fall speeds on certain aerial attacks. Character balance adjustments, like Garnet's altered ringout potential, further enhance the gameplay experience.

The transformation of MultiVersus into a significantly faster-paced game has been met with both joy and despair. While players are enjoying the improved gameplay, the knowledge of the game's impending shutdown on May 30th casts a shadow. This closure will end seasonal content and remove the game from digital storefronts, leaving only offline modes.

The timing of this significant gameplay improvement has fueled frustration and a sense of what-could-have-been. Comments on social media and Reddit express this sentiment, highlighting the game's potential had these changes been implemented earlier. The contrast between the improved gameplay and the impending closure is poignant, with players celebrating the game's final form while simultaneously mourning its end. Despite the overwhelmingly positive response to the Season 5 update, Player First Games and Warner Bros. remain committed to the shutdown plan. Real-money transactions have been disabled, and the premium battle pass is now free.

The community, while grappling with the game's fate, is finding solace in sharing memes and expressing their bittersweet feelings about a game that finally met their expectations only to disappear. MultiVersus will officially shut down at 9 am PT on May 30th.
