Niantic's April 17th update, intended to "modernize" avatars, was widely panned as a visual downgrade. Now, a new update has compounded the problem with a glitch randomly altering skin and hair tones, leading some players to suspect account hacks. One player's before-and-after images dramatically illustrate this, showing a complete transformation from light skin and white hair to dark skin and brown hair. While a fix is anticipated, Niantic has yet to officially address the issue.

This glitch is just the latest chapter in the ongoing saga of avatar dissatisfaction. Following the initial April update, rumors of rushed development circulated, fueled by comparisons between the new, poorly-received models and older, more favorably received ones.
Niantic further angered players by continuing to use the older, superior avatar models in advertising paid clothing items – a move many considered deceptive and an admission of the new avatars' inferiority.
The backlash resulted in a significant review bombing across app stores, though Pokemon GO's ratings (3.9/5 on the App Store, 4.2/5 on Google Play) have surprisingly held up relatively well.
