Sony has donated $5 million to aid first responders, community recovery, and support programs for those affected by the devastating wildfires raging across Southern California. Kenichiro Yoshida, Sony's chairman and CEO, and Hiroki Totoki, president and COO, issued a joint statement on X/Twitter, emphasizing Los Angeles's significance as the home of Sony's entertainment business for over 35 years and pledging continued collaboration with local leaders to maximize the impact of their support in the ongoing relief and recovery efforts.
The crisis, which began on January 7th, persists with three major wildfires continuing to cause widespread destruction in the greater Los Angeles area. The BBC reports 24 fatalities and 23 missing persons in the two largest affected zones, with firefighters preparing for challenging conditions as strong winds are forecast to return.
Sony's contribution joins those of other corporations committed to wildfire relief. CNBC reports that Disney donated $15 million, Netflix and Comcast each contributed $10 million, the NFL donated $5 million, Walmart gave $2.5 million, and Fox donated $1 million, among other corporate contributions.
