Following the reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2, it's clear that the partnership between Nintendo and Xbox is set to continue and flourish. Microsoft's head of gaming, Phil Spencer, recently reiterated his commitment to supporting the Switch platform, viewing it as an avenue to connect with gamers who are not part of the Xbox or PC ecosystems.
In a recent interview with Variety, Spencer was directly asked about specific projects planned for the Nintendo Switch 2. He affirmed that, just as Xbox has supported the original Switch, the company is eager to extend the same level of support to the Switch 2.
"Nintendo has been a great partner. We think it is a unique way for us to reach players who aren’t PC players, who aren’t players on Xbox," Spencer explained. "It lets us continue to grow our community of people that care about the franchises that we have, and that’s really important for us to make sure we continue to invest in our games."
"I’m really a big believer in what Nintendo means for this industry and us continuing to support them," Spencer added. "And getting the support from them for our franchises, I think, is an important part of our future."Spencer has been a vocal advocate for the Nintendo Switch 2, previously praising Nintendo's innovative approach when the Switch 2 was first teased. At that time, he also confirmed that Xbox would continue to broaden its game distribution across multiple platforms, including PlayStation, Steam, and Nintendo's consoles.
When Variety inquired whether the Switch 2's reveal made Spencer eager to unveil Xbox's upcoming console plans, he remained steadfast. "No. I think all of us in this industry should focus on our communities and the player base that we’re building," Spencer stated. "I get inspired by what a lot of different creators do and other platform holders. But I believe in the plans that we have."
The Xbox head underscored the company's strategy to keep delivering games and making them accessible "in as many places as possible," including via cloud services, PC, and various consoles. Titles like Pentiment and Obsidian's Grounded have already crossed over to Nintendo platforms, and it will be intriguing to see what Xbox brings to the Switch 2 once it launches.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is slated to officially debut on June 5, 2025. While pre-orders are not yet available, be sure to check our Switch 2 pre-order hub page for the latest updates on when they might become available.
