In Path of Exile 2, the Atlas map offers four main endgame events: Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions. The Expedition system, originally from the Expedition League, has been seamlessly integrated into the endgame content of PoE 2. This guide delves into the specifics of starting an Expedition, understanding the Detonator and Explosives, accessing the Delirium Passive Skill Tree, and uncovering the unique rewards available through the Expedition system.
PoE 2 Expedition & Detonation Mechanic, Explained
On the Atlas screen, map nodes with guaranteed endgame events are marked with distinct icons. Nodes containing an Expedition feature an ethereal light blue icon adorned with a spiral-like shape.
To ensure an Expedition encounter, use an Expedition Precursor Tablet in a completed Lost Tower slot on the Atlas screen. Once you load into a map with an Expedition, explore until you discover an area marked by Markers and a tent with one of four NPCs. These NPCs will introduce you to the event but won't detail the mechanics.
At the heart of the Expedition, you'll find a Detonator and a new UI element for Explosives at the bottom-right of your screen. Your objective is to strategically place Explosives to spawn Runic Monsters, Unearthed Remnants, and Excavated Chests.
- Runic Monsters: Triggered by Explosives near Red Markers. Larger Markers result in larger Runic Monster packs. These are the majority of Markers and are empowered by Unearthed Remnants.
- Unearthed Remnants: Indicated by tooltips above relics. They introduce beneficial or negative event modifiers, such as increased Elemental damage from monsters but enhanced item rarity from Excavated Chests.
- Excavated Chests: Spawned by Explosives near Black Markers with the Expedition symbol. These contain event-specific rewards like Artifacts, Logbooks, powerful Currencies, Waystones, and endgame gear.
Activate the Explosives button, and hover over the Expedition area to view the area of effect. Ensure your Explosives' green circles do not overlap for optimal farming. After placing your Explosives, return to the Detonator to activate them, spawning empowered Runic Monsters and starting the event.
If you die during an Expedition, the map resets, but you can retreat and return later. The event continues even if you leave the area, allowing you to Detonate, retreat, and return to confront all enemies at once using powerful AoE abilities.
Expedition Pinnacle Map
Expedition Logbooks, which drop from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests, are key to accessing the Expedition Pinnacle Map. Visit Dannig in the Hideout to open the Expedition Map for your Logbook. Slot the Logbook into the bottom slot and click "Open Portals" to access this expansive Expedition event, where you have more than triple the usual number of Explosives.
The Expedition Pinnacle Map features the Pinnacle Boss, Olroth, who may spawn during a Logbook map, with higher-level maps increasing the likelihood. If Olroth is present, a skull icon will appear on the minimap. Strategically place your Explosives to reach this Skull and engage Olroth.
Defeating Olroth grants 2x Expedition Passive Skill Tree points, crucial for enhancing your Expedition experiences through the Atlas Passive Skill Tree.
Expedition Passive Skill Tree
Accessible through the Atlas Passive Skill Tree menu, the Expedition Passive Skill Tree enhances your Expedition rewards by boosting Expedition Currency, increasing Monster spawns, and amplifying Remnant effects.
To view your Expedition passives, navigate to your Atlas Map, select the Atlas Passive Skill Tree menu on the top-left, and look to the top right of the screen. The Expedition section features a glowing blue spiral with eight Notable nodes and eight nodes that increase Logbook and Olroth difficulty.
You earn 2x Expedition Passive Skill points for each Olroth defeat, necessitating increased difficulty for new Notable nodes.
| Notable Expedition Passive | Effect | Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Extreme Archaeology | Reduces Explosives to 1 total, but increases radius by 150%, placement range by 100%, and reduces enemy Life by 20% | N/A |
| Disturbed Rest | Maps contain 50% more Runic Monster Flags | N/A |
| Detailed Records | 50% more Logbooks drop from Runic Monsters, and Logbooks always spawn with 3x Modifiers | Disturbed Rest |
| Timed Detonations | 50% more Artifacts drop from Runic Monsters, and Detonation chains travel 50% faster | N/A |
| Legendary Battles | 50% more Rare monsters in Expeditions, 50% more Exotic Coinage drops from Runic Monsters | Timed Detonations |
| Frail Treasures | Expeditions always contain 3x more Excavated Chest Markers, but they disappear after 5 seconds | N/A |
| Weight of History | 35% boost to Remnant effects | N/A |
| Unearthed Anomalies | Remnants gain an additional Suffix and Prefix modifier | Weight of History |
Recommended nodes include 'Disturbed Rest', 'Detailed Records', and 'Timed Detonations' for significant reward boosts with minimal downsides. Next, consider 'Weight of History', 'Unearthed Anomalies', and 'Legendary Battles' for enhanced rewards, though they increase difficulty. Avoid 'Extreme Archaeology' due to its drastic reduction in Explosives, which significantly limits your rewards.
PoE 2 Expedition Event Rewards
### Artifacts & Coinage Currencies Are Used For Purchasing Gear
The primary Expedition rewards are Artifacts, available in four types: Broken Circle, Black Scythe, Order, and Sun Artifacts. Each Artifact is used to trade with a specific Expedition vendor for targeted gear types.
| Reward | Broken Circle Artifact | Black Scythe Artifact | Order Artifact | Sun Artifact | Exotic Coinage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Use | Trade with Gwennen | Trade with Tujen | Trade with Rog | Trade with Dannig | Refresh any Expedition vendor's inventory |
| Gear | Weapons | Belts and Jewelry | Armor | Acquire other Artifacts | N/A |
Each Expedition features one vendor, limiting access to that vendor's inventory per encounter. Artifacts remain in your inventory post-map, so carry them into Expedition Maps.
Exotic Coinage, another reward, allows you to refresh the inventory of any Expedition NPC.
Expedition Logbooks Open A Unique Expedition Map To Progress
Expedition Logbooks occasionally drop from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests, linking to the Expedition Pinnacle system. Bring a Logbook to Dannig to open an Expedition Map and explore various Expedition zones.
There's a chance for Olroth, the Pinnacle Boss, to spawn in these maps. Defeating Olroth not only grants 2x Expedition Passive Skill Tree points but also high-tier Currency and a chance at exclusive Uniques. Increasing the difficulty of Expedition Maps and Logbooks boosts Olroth's spawn rate and the quality of rewards upon defeat.
