Mastering the Art of Parrying in Avowed: A Comprehensive Guide

In Avowed, the satisfying thrill of deflecting enemy attacks and turning their aggression into a devastating counter-offensive is a key gameplay element. This guide details how to unlock and effectively utilize the parry mechanic.

Unlocking the Parry Ability

The parry ability isn't available from the start; it requires investment. Navigate to the Abilities menu, select the Ranger tab, and locate the Parry ability in the top-middle column. Unlocking it necessitates allocating an Ability point to one of the three core skill trees. This unlocks the first rank.

Parry boasts three ranks, each with increasing effectiveness:

Rank Player Level Requirement Description
1 N/A (1 Point Spent) Unlocks the Parry ability.
2 Player Level 5 25% increased parry efficiency; greater enemy stun.
3 Player Level 8 50% increased parry efficiency; greater enemy stun.

Furthermore, at level 10, the "Arrow Deflection" ability becomes available, allowing you to parry projectiles.

Executing a Parry

Parrying involves perfectly timing a block just before an enemy attack connects. A metallic clang and a visual cue confirm a successful parry, leaving the enemy momentarily stunned. Mastering the timing requires practice, as it varies slightly between enemies; however, it's less demanding than in games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.

Limitations of Parrying

It's crucial to understand that not all attacks are parryable. Attacks indicated by a red circle necessitate dodging instead. Moreover, only certain weapons can parry: single-handed, two-handed weapons (excluding off-hand use), and shields (when equipped in the off-hand). Ranged weapons (guns, wands, bows) and grimoires cannot parry.

Benefits and Strategic Considerations

Parrying serves a dual purpose: it mitigates incoming damage and creates an opening for significant counter-attacks by stunning the opponent. This makes it particularly valuable for melee builds focused on close-quarters combat. Ranged-focused characters will likely find less use for it. However, Avowed's respec system allows for easy adjustments if you decide to change your approach later.

Avowed is available now.
