Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2 console may boast significantly redesigned Joy-Cons, according to newly surfaced patents. While Nintendo remains officially silent, leaked patents strongly suggest magnetic attachment and surprising mouse functionality.
The patents describe a game controller with magnetic attachment to the console. Two buttons, magnetically attracted to magnets within the console's docking recess, must be pressed simultaneously for detachment. The patent explicitly states: "This game controller is detachably mounted to a body device that has a recess, that comprises a first magnet and a second magnet at the bottom of the recess, and that can execute game processing."
Furthermore, the patents detail innovative mouse functionality. Holding the Joy-Con sideways, the R1 and R2 buttons function as left and right mouse clicks, respectively, with joystick movements potentially providing scrolling capabilities. Illustrations depict both dual-mouse and hybrid configurations (one Joy-Con as a mouse, the other as a standard controller).
The magnetic attachment was an early leak, but the mouse feature is a more recent revelation, though hinted at in a January teaser showing Joy-Cons smoothly gliding across a surface.
