Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is just weeks away from release, though fans will need to wait slightly longer for Fox Hunt, the game's online multiplayer component.
While the core single-player experience of Snake Eater launches on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on August 28, Fox Hunt will be added through a post-launch update this "fall." Konami hasn't provided any more specific timeframe than that.
First revealed in June, Fox Hunt represents a brand-new multiplayer experience distinct from Metal Gear Online, which shipped with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in 2008. The original MGO servers remained active for four years before shutting down in 2012.
"Fox Hunt is an entirely original online multiplayer mode," explained Yu Sahara, a veteran Metal Gear developer now serving as the mode's director. "While it exists within the same universe as Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, it offers completely different gameplay."
He continued: "Many fans might expect something similar to Metal Gear Online, but Fox Hunt will introduce a fresh take on multiplayer. We respect the enduring support from MGO enthusiasts, but the multiplayer landscape has evolved significantly since then. Designing this new mode required careful deliberation about what a contemporary online experience should offer."
Sahara emphasized that Fox Hunt will emphasize the franchise's signature stealth mechanics and survival aspects, aiming to "elevate camouflage systems and hide-and-seek gameplay" beyond traditional shooter mechanics.
Beyond the multiplayer component, Delta is a ground-up remake of the acclaimed 2004 title Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Notably, original creator Hideo Kojima has stated he doesn't plan to play the remake.
