"Mario Kart 9 Character Redesigned After Super Mario Bros. Movie"

By IsabellaMar 31,2025

Nintendo has unveiled the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 along with the exciting release of Mario Kart 9. Fans have quickly noticed that one character, in particular, has undergone a significant redesign, seemingly drawing inspiration from The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The trailer showcased over a dozen characters, but it was Donkey Kong who caught everyone's attention with his new look.

For years, even decades, Donkey Kong has maintained the same design across various games, including Mario Kart 8, Mario Tennis, and Donkey Kong Country Returns. However, the incredibly successful The Super Mario Bros. Movie introduced a fresh take on the character, and it appears Nintendo is now integrating this updated design into its latest games.

Although the trailer for Mario Kart 9 offered just a fleeting glimpse, and Donkey Kong appeared in only a few scenes, the difference in his design is already evident. A more detailed comparison will likely be available in April during the Nintendo Switch 2 Nintendo Direct. This event is highly anticipated as it promises to shed more light on the new console and its features.

The console reveal trailer hinted at the Nintendo Switch 2's appearance, confirming that it is mostly backwards compatible. It also introduced a mysterious new button on the Joy-Cons and confirmed a popular theory about using the controller as a mouse. While a release window of 2025 was announced, the Nintendo Switch 2 is not expected to hit the market before June, as numerous hands-on events are scheduled worldwide, with registration opening soon.
