In *Avowed*, one of the earliest significant decisions you'll face is whether to give Sargamis the Splinter of Eothas, which can lead to vastly different outcomes, including a bad ending, a worse one, and a somewhat positive result. This guide will walk you through what happens depending on your choice regarding the Splinter of Eothas.

What Happens If You Don’t Give the Splinter of Eothas to Sargamis in Avowed?

Sargamis confrontation in Avowed

When you refuse to hand over the Splinter of Eothas to Sargamis, it becomes clear from the conversation that this decision will lead to an unpleasant outcome. True to his threats, Sargamis engages you in combat, transforming into an optional boss with a distinctive name and a substantial health bar. This battle is one of the more challenging encounters early in the game.

During the fight, Sargamis summons two spirit creatures that primarily focus on Kai, leaving you somewhat free to strategize. He employs swift thrusting attacks with his sword, enabling him to close distances quickly. However, Sargamis is vulnerable to freezing, making ice spells a strategic choice to slow him down.

Upon defeating Sargamis, you are rewarded with the Last Light of Day mace, a unique-class weapon. This mace comes with enchantments that restore three percent of your health upon defeating an enemy and add a 10 percent bonus to fire damage for your attacks.

After agreeing to give the Splinter to Sargamis, you have several subsequent choices. You can change your mind at any point, which will prompt Sargamis to attack you. Alternatively, you can persuade him to enter the statue himself, resulting in his death and granting you the Last Light of Day mace.

Another option is to offer yourself to the statue. If you stand in the designated circle and wait for Sargamis to activate the machine, you will die but earn the "Get In The Statue, Envoy" achievement. Reloading the game will place you back at the decision point. If you choose to leave the circle prematurely, Sargamis will become enraged and attack you.

How To Finish Dawntreader Without Killing Sargamis in Avowed

Alternative resolution with Sargamis in Avowed

The best outcome involves convincing Sargamis that his plan is doomed to fail, but this requires an Intellect stat of 4 or higher. If you need to adjust your attributes, consult our Avowed respec guide. Place the Splinter in the statue before speaking with Sargamis, activate the machine, and then discuss the failure with him. Successfully convincing him that his plan won't work leads to him abandoning the idea.

To initiate this path, choosing the Court Augur or Arcane Scholar background may be necessary, though other backgrounds might offer similar options. Guide Sargamis to realize that Eothas is gone, but avoid the intellect option related to live soul transfer.

After Sargamis leaves, you can decide whether to allow the voice to use the statue or destroy it yourself. Then, locate Sargamis in his quarters to conclude this segment of the Dawntreader quest, earning more experience than if you had fought him or handed over the Splinter.
