Dune: Awakening Unveils Late-Game Play Before Debut

By DavidMar 16,2026

Funcom told us to "let them cook," and after last night's Dune: Awakening showcase, it's clear the developers delivered. With early access just days away, Funcom hosted a livestream highlighting the game's mid-to-endgame content and a comprehensive tour of the Hagga Basin. The stream emphasized the "size and variety players can expect," showcasing "the lush O’odham, the forbidding Hagga Rift, and the tall spires and imposing rock formations of Jabal Eifrit, to name just a few."

Inspired by Denis Villeneuve and Legendary Entertainment’s blockbuster films, Dune: Awakening marks the first time players can freely explore Arrakis in an open-world format. Until now, beta testers have only seen about 25% of the Hagga Basin, so the stream finally revealed "these huge and diverse landscapes" in their full glory.

"Before even venturing into the vast dunes and dangers of the Deep Desert, players will experience a full-scale survival game," Funcom revealed.

"They can rise through the ranks of the Atreides or Harkonnen, build powerful strongholds, brave Imperial Testing Stations, craft advanced schematics, and explore and harvest resources using a variety of vehicles—and much more." Additionally, the "Landsraad feature allows every player to contribute to their faction's progress, whether they prefer PvE or PvP."

Dune: Awakening is an open-world survival MMO set on the universe's most dangerous planet. You'll master survival in the desert by learning Fremen ways and expand your potential through combat, spice harvesting, building, and trade. Following a three-week delay to address issues found in beta testing, the game is now scheduled for release on June 10, 2025, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. However, players with an "early start" access can begin playing five days earlier, starting June 5.

"As a longtime Dune fan, it's incredibly satisfying to explore and learn more about this cherished world. Funcom has clearly invested immense effort into worldbuilding and lore, even while taking creative liberty by setting Awakening in a parallel reality distinct from the books and films," we noted in IGN's Dune: Awakening closed beta preview.

"Small details have a major impact on gameplay. Without spoilers, this meticulous attention touches nearly every aspect of the world, including the factions and characters you encounter, which should delight any fan of the series."
