Cold Day in Hell takes place in a future where Matt Murdock has lost his powers, grappling with age and past traumas. He's not alone; superheroes are largely absent from this futuristic Marvel Universe. Soule explains Matt's power loss is a simple consequence of the radioactive accident that granted him his abilities—the radioactivity has faded over time. He retains his combat skills, but is essentially an ordinary older man with an extraordinary past.
The "aging superhero returns" trope is common, appearing in various Marvel titles, including Old Man Logan. Soule explains this type of story effectively redefines characters, stripping them to their core while offering creative freedom outside regular continuity. Cold Day in Hell creates its own corner of the Marvel Universe with a unique past, allowing Soule and McNiven to incorporate iconic elements while adding their own spin.
This isn't Soule and McNiven's first collaboration exploring mortality; Death of Wolverine similarly dealt with a hero confronting their limits. Soule considers each collaboration an evolution of their working relationship and friendship, describing their process on Cold Day in Hell as highly collaborative and experimental, a back-and-forth resulting in a unique "jazz" feel.
The story explores how Daredevil's supporting cast and villains have aged, promising surprises. Soule is tight-lipped, teasing that this is a major draw for readers.
Cold Day in Hell is designed as an accessible entry point into Daredevil comics, requiring only basic knowledge of the character and his history. Familiarity with key adversaries and allies is helpful but not essential.
Daredevil: Born Again draws inspiration from Soule's 2015-2018 run, including Mayor Fisk and Muse. Soule confirms the show incorporates thematic elements and other surprises from his comic run, describing the experience as amazing and rewarding.
