Marathon Showcase Set by Bungie

By MatthewApr 10,2026

Bungie is gearing up to unveil fresh gameplay footage of Marathon, its highly anticipated PvP extraction shooter, during a special livestream this Saturday, April 12 (or April 13 for some time zones).

Last week, the Destiny studio teased fans with a cryptic tweet featuring a 15-second clip that sparked widespread speculation as part of an elaborate alternate reality game.

The community decoded that the ASCII art concealed "a segment from the original trailer," with sharp-eyed players recognizing "the Runner sprinting through a corridor seen in the debut footage."

One fan humorously noted: "WHEN WILL HE RETURN ERROR ERROR ERROR HAS OCCURRED THE ENEMY RETURNED SYSTEM WARNING: PROTOCOL BREACH EVACUATE THE BASE IMMEDIATELY ALL UNITS REPORT TO STATION INITIATE EMERGENCY PROTOCOL 7 DATA LOSS IMMINENT GOOD LUCK, COMMANDER."

"Through global collaboration, thousands of players unlocked the reveal date for Marathon's gameplay showcase," Bungie stated, announcing the livestream for Saturday at 10 am PDT (San Francisco) / 1 pm EDT (New York) / 6 pm BST (London) – continuing worldwide until Sunday morning in Tokyo and Sydney.

Originally announced in May 2023, this reboot of Bungie's cult-classic franchise maintains its signature blend of "mystery, unsettling atmospheres, and psychological tension." Set on Tau Ceti IV, players become Runners – augmented mercenaries built to survive the planet's extreme conditions while scavenging abandoned colonies for advanced weaponry and gear.

Following sparse updates since reveal, Bungie shared a development video last October detailing core gameplay systems, while emphasizing the project's early stage.

The cancellation of Concord has prompted Sony to recalibrate its live-service strategy. President Hiroki Totoki confirmed in November 2023 that only six of twelve planned service games would launch by March 2026, indirectly confirming the demise of The Last of Us multiplayer.

Bungie faces its own challenges, having cut 220 positions (17% of staff) in July 2024, following earlier layoffs eliminating 100 roles. Weeks later, reports surfaced that ex-Marathon director Chris Barrett was dismissed after misconduct allegations, leading to his $200 million lawsuit against Sony and Bungie.

Catch the Marathon showcase live on April 12 via the official Marathon Twitch channel.
