Astro Bot: A Platforming Phenomenon Crowned with 104 Game of the Year Awards

Team Asobi's Astro Bot has achieved a remarkable feat, surpassing all other platformers to become the most awarded in history, boasting an impressive 104 Game of the Year accolades. This surpasses the previous record holder, It Takes Two, by a significant 16 awards.

Initially launched in September 2024, Astro Bot, an expansion of the popular Astro's Playroom tech demo, quickly exceeded expectations. It garnered immediate critical acclaim, becoming the highest-rated new game of 2024. The game's success culminated in a triumphant win at The Game Awards 2024, securing the coveted Game of the Year award.

However, the story doesn't end there. As highlighted by NextGenPlayer on Twitter, utilizing data from gamefa.com's Game of the Year Award Tracker, Astro Bot's total Game of the Year wins now stand at a phenomenal 104.

While this achievement is monumental for a platformer, it's worth noting that the game's award count still lags behind industry giants like Baldur's Gate 3 (288 wins), Elden Ring (435 wins), and The Last of Us Part II (326 wins). Nevertheless, Astro Bot's success is undeniable.

The game's commercial performance also reflects its critical acclaim. By November 2024, Astro Bot had sold over 1.5 million copies—a significant achievement considering its relatively small development team (under 70 developers) and three-year development cycle. Astro Bot has undeniably transformed from a niche title into a major player in the PlayStation franchise.
