Microsoft has revealed updates to Xbox Game Pass. Starting today, both the Ultimate and PC tiers are seeing price reductions; however, Call of Duty titles will no longer be available at launch on these subscriptions moving forward. Instead, new entries in the franchise will arrive approximately a year post-launch, while previously released CoD games remain accessible as usual.
According to Microsoft's official announcement, Game Pass Ultimate is dropping from $29.99 to $22.99 per month (reducing from £22.99 to £16.99 for UK subscribers). PC Game Pass prices are falling from $16.49 to $13.99 monthly (£13.49 down to £10.99 in the UK). For context, last October's price increase raised PC Game Pass from $11.99 to $16.49 and Ultimate from $19.99 to $29.99, meaning current rates remain slightly above pre-increase levels.
"Starting this year, new Call of Duty games will not launch on Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass," Microsoft stated. "New releases will join the service during the following holiday season—roughly a year later—while existing titles already in the library will stay available."
The company added: "Our player base spans diverse geographies, preferences, and tastes. While no single model suits everyone, this adjustment reflects significant feedback we've received. We remain committed to listening and learning."
This strategy aligns with recent efforts to stabilize Xbox under new leadership Asha Sharma, who took over after Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond departed in February. The implication is that last year's price hike may have impacted subscriber growth, so shifting Call of Duty launch sales directly could help lower subscription costs. However, even at these reduced rates, the value proposition remains slightly weaker than before the previous increase.
In essence, this change means games are exclusive to direct purchase for a period rather than being part of an all-access bundle, potentially offering better deals through monthly subscriptions after that window closes.
