Wesley Snipes on Blade MCU Reboot: Why the Delay?

By HazelMay 13,2025

The writer of the Wesley Snipes' Blade trilogy, David S. Goyer, has expressed his readiness to assist Marvel chief Kevin Feige in revitalizing Mahershala Ali’s stalled MCU reboot of Blade. Despite being announced at San Diego Comic Con in 2019 with a projected release this November, the film has faced numerous setbacks and is currently off Marvel’s release schedule without a new date confirmed.

Recent statements from those involved in the project paint a picture of a production that has fallen apart. Rapper and artist Flying Lotus, who was set to compose music for the film, shared on X/Twitter that the project is no longer viable. "I guess we are so far from it even being a possibility now but. Yeah I was signed on to write music for the new BLADE movie before it fell thru," he stated, adding that while he doubts it will happen, it would have been a fun project.

Similarly, costume designer Ruth E. Carter, known for her work on Sinners, confirmed on The John Campea Show that she was slated to design costumes for Blade, which was to be set in the 1920s—a setting that promised unique and exciting design opportunities. Actor Delroy Lindo, who was also attached to the film, shared with Entertainment Weekly that despite initial enthusiasm and inclusive discussions with the production team, the project derailed for unspecified reasons.

The film has seen a revolving door of directors, including Yann Demange and Bassam Tariq, none of whom stayed on to complete the project. In an interview with ScreenRant, Goyer expressed his confusion and eagerness to contribute, saying, "I would... I’ve always loved the character and I love him. I’ve been sitting on the sidelines wondering, ‘What in the world is going on? Why is it taking so long?’"

Despite the setbacks, Kevin Feige remains committed to the project. In a November 2024 interview with Omelete, he affirmed Marvel’s dedication to bringing Blade to the MCU, praising Mahershala Ali’s interpretation of the character and promising updates as the project progresses.

Meanwhile, the MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine, which featured a cameo by Wesley Snipes reprising his role as Blade, was a massive success, grossing $1.3 billion globally. Ryan Reynolds, who stars as Deadpool, has publicly called for a standalone film for Snipes' Blade, likening it to Hugh Jackman's Logan. Reynolds credits the original Blade films for paving the way for the superhero genre, stating on X/Twitter, "There is no Fox Marvel Universe or MCU without Blade first creating a market... He’s Marvel Daddy. Please retweet for a Logan-like send-off."

Additionally, Reynolds is reportedly in the early stages of developing a Deadpool and X-Men ensemble film, where Deadpool would not be the main focus but rather share the spotlight with other X-Men characters, allowing them to be "used in unexpected ways," according to THR.
