Relic Entertainment has unveiled Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Definitive Edition, a modernized release of its acclaimed 20-year-old real-time strategy classic.

Scheduled to launch on PC via Steam and GOG later this year, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Definitive Edition preserves the core gameplay fans know and love, while being fully optimized for contemporary hardware. IGN secured an exclusive interview with design director Philippe Boulle, detailing everything about the Definitive Edition—a must-read for any Dawn of War enthusiast.

Fans have been eagerly requesting a revival of the Dawn of War series, and this first game—widely considered one of the finest Warhammer 40,000 titles ever created—serves as a perfect starting point. Many hope Relic will use this release as a foundation for developing an entirely new Dawn of War game, potentially Dawn of War 4.

The Definitive Edition bundles all original Dawn of War content and its standalone expansions into one package, featuring four classic campaigns, nine unique armies, and over 200 maps. It supports 4K resolution with upscaled textures (four times the original detail) and incorporates image-based lighting for enhanced visual fidelity without compromising the classic feel. Improvements to world lighting, unit reflections, and shadows are included, alongside new unit gloss and emissive lighting that vividly heighten the in-game action.

Players can now zoom the camera out further for a broader view of the battlefield, and the HUD and interface have been refined for widescreen displays. Upgraded to a 64-bit platform, Dawn of War now offers better support for the modding community and will be compatible with over two decades of fan-created mods at launch.

“With Warhammer 40,000 enjoying unprecedented popularity, we want new players to discover where the iconic Dawn of War series began, while giving longtime fans a complete and polished way to relive it.”
